Help & Advice Centre

Welcome to our help and advice centre designed to answer the majority of questions our customers have about buying and selling gold and silver. If your question is not answered on these pages or you would like additional help, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Fill in the request form with your full name, postal address, telephone number and email address. We will then send you a pack which will include a Special Delivery Postage bag and an unique Enquiry number. You are now ready to parcel up your unwanted or broken gold and send to us via your local Post Office. Hatton Garden Metals do not cover the cost of postage.

Selling your unwanted precious metals or releasing gold coins and bars to us is easier than you think. Simply visit our Sell gold page, enter the weight of your carats and receive your valuation on the spot. Once you are all signed up or signed in, the system will generate an Enquiry number for you. Please print this page or make a note of this enquiry number in your parcel. That's it, your package is ready to ship.

We require to see specific identification from our customers to comply with Money Laundering and HMRC regulations.

  • Up to £5000: One form of photographic I.D is necessary such as a Passport, driving license or National Identity card.
  • Above the value of £5000: Customers need to provide two forms of I.D on orders above the value of £5000 including photo ID (passport, driving license or national identity card) and a separate proof of address document (bank statement, utility bill etc) dated within the last 3 months.

We understand that some of your items might not be Hallmarked or the stamp has been worn away, making it pretty difficult to identify.

If you are unsure on either the carat value or precious metal content, please weigh all items that fall under this category. Once you have done this, list them under the carat you think it is and make use of the note section on our gold form.

To provide an approximate weight of your gold, we recommend using kitchen scales as these seem to be the most accurate and accessible when gauging the weight of your gold items.

We test and validate all items once they arrive and will be able to inform you of the value we would pay for your items.

We do not accept a Royal Mail Post Office receipt as proof of weight, as their scales are highly inaccurate.

If your coin is mounted in a gold mount you will be paid for the value coin plus the value of the gold that the coin is mounted to. To work out the weight of gold please deduct 8g for a Full Sovereign, 4g for a Half Sovereign and 34g for a Full Krugerrand.

If you have requested for your non-gold items to be returned, we will despatch these items within two working days of processing your enquiry by Royal Mail Special Delivery.

If you have not requested for your non-gold items to be returned, they will be stored on our premises for 1 month from us receiving your parcel, after this time they will be destroyed.

If all your items are non-gold, you will receive an email informing this. You should then contact our office on 0207 404 4000 to request the return of your items. Please note that we offer this service for a charge of £8.95.

No, all stones that are left in your metal are non-returnable and are either crushed or melted. Under no circumstances do these stones get returned.

The section on the form that states "RETURN NON-GOLD ITEMS" does not refer to stones.

Hatton Garden Metals Ltd will not be held responsible for any of the stones that you fail to remove from your items.

If you would like to keep your stones, these must be removed before the items are sent to us, as stone removal is not a service we offer.

If you have checked the Royal Mail website and it shows that your parcel has been delivered, please be aware that we have to process many parcels each day and your parcel will be in a queue to be opened. Parcels are opened from around 8.30 am and we ensure that every parcel is processed on the day of receipt.

If you have not received your payment for your gold before 4pm, please call the office on 0207 404 4000 and a member of our team will be happy to investigate this further.

Other than gold and silver, we also purchase your Platinum and Palladium scrap or jewellery. Please refer to the 'sell gold form' where you will be able to find the rates we pay for these items.

Carat values

  • .999 = 24 carat = 99.9%
  • .916 = 22 carat = 91.6%
  • .750 = 18 carat = 75%
  • .583 = 14 carat = 58.3%
  • .375 = 9 carat = 37.5%

How do you know the carat value?

We use acid testing, which involves filing into the item, and placing a small drop of Nitric Acid on the item. The reaction of the acid determines the carat of the items. For larger quantities or higher carats, we may need to Melt and Assay the items.

What is a hallmark?

A hallmark is an official mark or series of marks, struck on items made of precious metals. In the UK, a hallmark is made of several elements including: a mark for the type of metal, the makers' mark and the year of making. Hallmarks are an official mark of guaranteed metal content. We pay the same price for hallmarked and un-hallmarked items, subject to testing (for larger quantities a Melt and Assay). Please note, that many items bought outside the UK may be stamped and not hallmarked. This means that the item is not guaranteed to be the carat that the stamp states.

The CGT acronym refers to Capital Gains Tax. CGT is a tax on the profit made when you sell or release the value of an asset - during the time that you have owned them. An asset is considered as something you own which can be released and converted into cash. For instance, when you purchase gold such as bullion or coins from Hatton Garden Metals these items would then be considered as your assets.

Although the majority of bullion and coin investors will not meet the Capital Gains Tax threshold on their bullion or coins, it is important to understand CGT and your tax free allowance.

For 2019-2020 Capital Gains tax allowance is £12,000.

This means that you do not pay Capital Gain Tax on an investment when you release a profit of up to £12,000 in one financial year. Please note the £12,000 is not the total value of your coins or bullion, but the profit made from the sale of your items i.e. the increased value of your coins or bullion from when you bought them to when you sold them.

For further information on Capital Gains Tax please visit the HMRC website.

Please note it is the responsibility of the individual and not Hatton Garden Metals to declare any tax payable.

All of your investment gold coin and bar purchases are not subject to VAT. This will not apply on silver bullion items; VAT is charged at the rate of 20% when you are purchasing silver as part of your precious metal portfolio.
